It looks more like a scene from a sci-fi movie than an actual scene on Earth. Photographer James Garlick captured this mind blowing photo when he arrived at a beach in Tasmania, Australia on May 18th, 2015. What he saw took his breath away. He stood in awe at the enchanted glowing waves gliding under the billions of stars in the Milky Way. The bright blue waves were indeed a rare and exciting sight and highly sought after by any one who goes there.

The luminous water is actually filled with millions of bioluminescent plankton that crowd the shores at certain times of the year. They have evolved this strategic defense mechanism to draw very large predators to the shallow waters where they converge, to devour the sea life that may feast upon the tiny creatures. They light up when agitated such as the waves hitting the shore or if someone moves the water around. Witnesses to this amazing phenomena often describe it as seeing millions of stars shimmering with the movement of the waves.

Here James describes his sureal experience when he encountered this other worldly scene:

"Right now in the southern waters of Tasmania we are experiencing an amazing presence of bioluminescent phytoplankton. It was mind-blowing stepping out of my car and seeing this entire foreshore glowing. With every little movement in the water an awesome burst of blue woul appear. I never thought I'd actually see this wonderful phenomenon in person.

Photographed on the South Arm Penisula, Tasmania, Australia."

James also took amazing video of the eletric blue waves. (seen below)

So at the moment there is bioluminescent phytoplankton floating around in Tassie waters. Went out for a play tonight and it's pretty darn cool! Photos to come soon ;)
